BoomBeez Honey
Is your honey organic?

Our honey comes from small, family-run farms and beekeepers in Bosnia and Herzegovina who do not use any form of pesticides; still, we cannot label the honey as organic, even though it goes directly from those farms into our jars.

In the USA, for a product to be labeled as organic, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires a full investigation of the facility where a particular food is produced or processed. BoomBeez® cannot label its food organic without the FDA’s approval of all of the local farms we source in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It’s an expensive process and, as of now, local farmers and beekeeping associations do not have the funding to get their farms certified as organic. The export industry from Bosnia and Herzegovina is a relatively new and developing industry -- hopefully it will grow with time, and our beekeepers and farmers will be able to afford the required. Until then, our products will be labeled as raw honey.

Is your honey pasteurized?

No, our honey is not pasteurized -- or modified in any way -- before BoomBeez® sells it. Our honey is raw and natural, taken straight from the hives and then strained to ensure no foreign particles, such as wax, remain. Our honey is then scooped straight into jars and sold directly from our BoomBeez® family to yours.

Do you have a retail store?

We currently do not have a retail store. Orders can be placed solely via our website. However, we do sometimes bring our products to farmers’ markets in the New York metropolitan area. Check out our Facebook page here to see our upcoming event schedule.

What happens if my honey starts to form crystals?

It’s perfectly natural to have crystallization in your honey. Honey forms crystals due to its high levels of glucose. Crystals do not mean the honey has gone bad. Simply place the jar of honey in warm water for about 20 minutes, stirring it frequently. This will help the honey to liquefy. Keep in mind that honey is best stored at room temperature.

Why is the honey different colors?

Honey comes in many different shades due to the various flower species on which bees feed. Honey ranges from nearly colorless to a dark brown. The flavor of the honey tends to correlate directly with the color. For example, the lighter the color the more mild the flavor, and the darker the color, the bolder the taste.

Why does it say 12 grams of added sugar on the nutrition facts?

Recently, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) updated its method for labeling food products. One of the new regulations states that the sugar content of any honey product -- although honey contains 100 percent natural sugar -- must be labelled, in grams, both as sugar and as added sugar. Many honey companies have tried to get this decision reversed, because it confuses the consumer. All of our honey contains natural sugar, none of which is added after the honey is collected from the hives. Still, we have to list the sugar as both. That is why you see 12 grams of sugar and 12 grams of added sugar. Our products only contain 12 grams of sugar in total. Our products must follow FDA rules and be labelled as the government mandates. You can find an explanation of this on the FDA’s website here.

What is the shelf life of my honey?

Our honey has a lifetime shelf life; honey does not spoil. We put a "Best By" date on our products due to government regulations. Click HERE for more information.

Should I refrigerate my honey?

Honey does not need to be refrigerated. Using honey is much easier when it is stored at room temperature. Honey is best when it is kept at temperatures between 50 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. In extreme temperatures, honey can lose its flavor and change color. The best way to store honey is in a glass jar at room temperature.

Why can't I give honey to children under 12 months?

Honey may contain spores from Clostridium botulinum which may lead to botulism poisoning. Although this is rare, it is best to keep raw natural honey away from children under 12 months. In adults and older children these spores are destroyed in the digestive system.

Is there anyone else who should avoid raw honey?

Anyone with a known allergy or sensitivity to celery or pollen, or with any other bee-related allergies, should avoid raw honey. Also, avoid honey made from plants in the Rhododendron genus, due to toxicity.

Note: Honey that is contaminated with the bacteria Clostridium botulinum may cause poisoning in infants and young children. However, this is not a danger for older children and adults.
